When to Turn Noise Suppression Off in Teams: Music, Training and Live Demos

Leave noise suppression on for ordinary conversation, and turn it down or off whenever the sound you want people to hear is not a human voice. Suppression works by separating speech from everything else and discarding the everything else. That is perfect for a barking dog. It is a disaster for a guitar, a machine you are demonstrating, or the audio cue in a fitness class, because Teams treats all of them as noise and quietly removes them.

How suppression decides what to remove

Teams offers several suppression levels, generally an automatic setting, a high setting, a low setting and off. The stronger levels use a model trained to recognize speech, and they are aggressive about anything that does not resemble it. Steady sounds such as fans go first. Sudden non-speech sounds such as typing, door slams and paper rustling follow.

The trouble is that a sustained note on a violin looks, to such a system, a lot like the hum of an appliance. A drum hit resembles a door slam. The click of a relay, the whir of a motor or the beep of a medical training device are all exactly the kind of sounds suppression was built to erase. The result is music that warbles, fades in and out or disappears, and demonstrations where the presenter says “listen to this” and the audience hears nothing.

Situations where you should change it

Music lessons, rehearsals and performances

Any instrument, and singing too, suffers under strong suppression. Sustained vowels in singing can be treated as steady noise and thinned out. Teams includes a high fidelity music mode for this purpose. It is enabled in the device settings and then switched on during a meeting, and it raises audio quality while letting you relax the processing that damages music. It works best on a wired network connection and with a decent external microphone. Wear headphones if you also switch off echo cancellation, since without it any sound from your speakers will feed straight back into the call.

Training with equipment or sound cues

A technician teaching colleagues to recognize a failing bearing, a language teacher playing pronunciation clips from a nearby speaker, a first aid trainer demonstrating a device that gives spoken and tonal prompts: in each case the background sound is the lesson. Set suppression to low or off for the demonstration, and tell participants you are doing it so that nobody is surprised by a noisier feed.

Product demos and ambient sound

Showing how quiet an appliance is, how a doorbell chimes or how a toy responds all depend on the microphone passing sound through untouched. The same applies to events where atmosphere matters, such as applause in a hybrid room, which strong suppression can turn into odd flutters of noise.

Playing media from your computer

If the sound comes from a file or a browser tab, do not play it through your speakers into your microphone at all. Use the option to include computer sound when you share your screen or a window. That sends the audio digitally, bypassing the microphone and its suppression entirely, and it is always cleaner.

Changing the setting without regretting it

The level can be set in the Teams device settings and adjusted from within a meeting through the audio settings. Turning suppression off hands responsibility for noise back to you. Before you do it, quiet the room as far as you can: close windows, stop fans, silence phones and move the microphone close to the sound source so it dominates whatever else is present. A close microphone in a quiet room with suppression off sounds natural and detailed. A distant one in a noisy room sounds like chaos.

Try the low setting first. It removes steady background hum while letting through much more than the high setting does, and for many demos it is enough. Go to off only if low still damages the sound you need.

Rehearse with a colleague on a separate connection. Your own headphones cannot tell you what suppression is doing, because you hear your room directly. Ask your tester to describe what happens when you play, run the machine or trigger the sound, and adjust until they hear it consistently.

Switch it back afterward

The setting persists, and forgetting to restore it is the classic mistake. The music teacher who turns suppression off for a lesson and then joins a staff meeting from the kitchen shares every clatter with the whole faculty. Make restoring the automatic setting part of your wrap-up routine, alongside stopping the screen share.
